Red-Tailed Hawks - October Update

Happy Fall Everyone!

We had a great September, with lots of lessons, learning, and fun. We have a wide variety of work in progress, and are enjoying many different, interesting researches and presentations. We have continued to enjoy "tortoise-sitting" our hatchlings, and are preparing (mentally) for the eventual going-out to the tortoise rescue. The Red-tailed Hawks have chosen one cute little tortoise to adopt and have named her (or him, it's hard to tell now) Ms. Rumblemuffin (a nod to the Giant in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe). The rest of the hatchlings will be surrendered to a rescue for adoption.

In class, we have been busy at work with lessons on math, language, geometry, art, and more. The students are finishing up their string art projects, which have turned out beautifully. Our older students are working with the writing process and have been working on story mapping and multi-paragraph writing. Apostrophe usage and sentence editing have kept our Writer's Workshop kiddos busy, and our new friends are learning cursive letters. There is a lot of reading going on in the classroom. In honor of the Keystone Fall Event, the class is reading The Secret Garden. We are also working phonograms, synonyms, and other vocabulary work. In math, there has been a focus on multiples of numbers, fractions, addition math facts and long division. The students are getting into a routine of independently choosing work, working productively in a group, and balancing socializing with academic work.

In October, we will begin our classroom observations and parent teacher conferences. Please be sure to sign up for both on School Cues. We are excited to share with you some of the work that is going on in the classroom. Our awesome room parents, Jamia, Chasa and Kimberly, have begun working with the students to create our beautiful Music Garden for the Auction.

On a final note, just a reminder that student snack should be a fresh fruit, vegetable or lean protein, Several students have noticed, and commented (this IS the "age of fairness" after all), that some friends are beginning to "stretch the rules" in regards to snack time.

Have a wonderful and safe Fall Break everyone!

In peace and appreciation,

Mrs. Amie
