Dear GHO Families,
In this beautiful season, we recently enjoyed a relaxing fall break, and now we’re thrilled to see all the children’s tremendous progress across subjects.
Our first graders have been busy exploring new concepts in math and geometry. They have learned the four basic operations using materials like the Large Bead Frame and have been introduced to fractions, exploring concepts of Congruence, Similarity, and Equivalence. In Language, they enjoyed studying Word Families, Adjectives, and grammar boxes, and many made impressive strides in their cursive handwriting. Science lessons brought the children closer to understanding the earth and sun's relationship and introduced them to the story of plants. They also loved participating in the Animal Q&A activity and began practicing time-telling with our “Minute Activity” exercises.
Second graders have delved into math activities involving the Peg Board for exploring Lowest Common Multiples, Racks and Tubes for Group Division, and various tools like the Checkerboard, Flat Bead Frame, and Large Bead Frame for advanced operations. They also worked on angles and lines. In Language, they covered topics such as Noun Classification, Adjective Command Cards, and Verb Identification. Science introduced them to the Parts of a Leaf, Earth’s movements, clock time, the solar system, and parts of a flower, and we discussed BCE and CE timelines. They’re developing a broader understanding of how the world works!
Our third graders continued their exploration of math concepts, such as finding Common Multiples with the Peg Board, understanding Fraction Equivalence, mastering Long Division, and working with Metal Inset materials. Language studies included a focus on conjunctions and the Conjunction Grammar Box, and students practiced their writing skills. In science, they studied leaf classifications, how roots and leaves collaborate, and worked with Timezone Charts to see how different regions of the world experience time.
In Art and Music, the children have been exploring the Elements of Art, creating unique line art using various shapes, which they proudly displayed in their journals. They also learned a Chinese children’s song that we incorporate into our physical education games, making music and movement a combined experience.
This month, we are so grateful for our Key Parents and all the parents who helped with our Fall Festival. Thanks to their efforts, the children enjoyed painting our Fall Festival bench in vibrant colors, bringing the spirit of the season to life. Another wonderful Key Parent, Katie, organized our Fall Festival basket, ensuring it was beautifully arranged for the event.
We also celebrated Em’s and Sydney’s birthdays this month. The children sang “Happy Birthday” in five languages—English, Spanish, Chinese, French, and Korean—creating a wonderful multicultural celebration. For our next birthday celebration, we’re excited to add a German version of the birthday song to our repertoire, broadening our classroom’s cultural exposure even further.
Our Potluck gathering at the park was a fantastic day! The children had a great time playing, while the parents enjoyed an opportunity to connect, sharing stories and building bonds. It was a truly enjoyable event, and we’re grateful for everyone who made it possible.
