Dear Friends of the Great Horned Owls,
We are now in the second month of the school year, and our new students have already adapted well to their new environment. They continue to improve both academically and socially.
Our first graders have made remarkable progress in their academics. Many of them have earned their first real journals because of their excellent handwriting and their ability to express themselves in writing. In math, they completed the Wooden Hierarchical Material lessons, a fundamental building block for elementary math, and have begun learning long multiplication using the Large Bead Frame and multiples. In geometry, they designed shapes using Metal Insets and learned how to use a compass to draw flowers. We also introduced the essential concepts of congruence, similarity, and equivalence. In language, we focused on word study and the Grammar Box, exploring nouns and articles. In science, they continued working on the Blank Timeline of Life, studied the Story of Plants and the Layers of the Earth, and began learning to read the clock, understand the days of the week, and explore the fundamental needs of human beings.
Our second graders are also making significant strides. In math, we continued working on long multiplication and division using the Large Bead Frame, Checkerboard, and Racks and Tubes. The students are also learning about multiples, the Commutative Law, the Distributive Law, and equivalent fractions. In language, they deepened their understanding of grammar and created beautiful noun booklets. In geometry, we explored how to draw the flower of life using a compass, and we reviewed the concepts of congruence, similarity, and equivalence. In science, we learned about using a compass, the classification of leaves, and explored the relationship between the sun and the Earth. They also created a “My Day” booklet, reviewed how to read the face clock, and learned the days of the week. Additionally, we introduced the Second Timeline of Human Beings.
Our third graders, who serve as the class leaders, are excelling in both academics and social development. In math, they tackled long multiplication using the Large Bead Frame, Checkerboard, and Flat Bead Frame, and practiced long division with the Racks and Tubes. In language, they continued their work with the Grammar Box and Command Cards. In geometry, we reviewed important concepts like congruence, similarity, and equivalence, using tools such as Metal Insets, the Triangle Box, and both the Small and Large Hexagonal Boxes. In science, the students studied various types of leaves, learned about the classification of leaves, explored the different types of reticulate veins, and discovered different methods of combining leaves. We also introduced the BCE/CE Timeline, and the students worked on creating their own family timelines.
In Art and Music, all the children enjoyed knitting bracelets. We also explored fine art by examining different types of lines in various artworks. The students learned how to use the Tone Bars, and some are now able to play music with them. In PE, we began learning the traditional Chinese Qigong: Five Animal Qigong.
With the help of our Key Parents, the children worked together to paint a beautiful bench in preparation for our upcoming Fall Festival. Their creativity and attention to detail really shone through, and the final result was truly impressive.
