Great Horned Owls - October 2023 Web Update

Dear Great Horned Owls Families -

The first quarter has come to a close!

The children spent this last week doing their first long term experiment by testing their basic solar oven on Monday and then doing one singular improvement or change every day. They made observations of why their ovens were not getting as hot or losing heat. They learned to read a thermometer using Celsius degrees. There were discussions on data point anomalies and possible reasons why could possibly be viewed as outliers. We’ll continue when we return from break and then celebrate by making s’mores in the ovens. We ended the week with children working with the Key classroom parents on our art project. Be on the look out for observation and conference sign-up times.

Garden:

Over break I’ll be making some garden box lids with PVC pipes and screens to get ready for the children to plant when they return from Fall break. With this said, we would love parents to donate up to 10 bags of gardening soil. It was suggested to get Kellogg’s Organic Plus Raised Bed and Potting Mix. Thank you advance for any donations.

The Psychology of Parenting with Dr. Lisa Damour Podcast:

I had the opportunity to listen to an interview between Dr. Lisa Damour and the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy about children and the effects of technology on them. I thought I would pass along the link to this specific episode.

Art Walk, Fall Festival, and Tax Credit:

On Saturday, October 21st Keystone has the Art Walk where you can preview all the art projects, raffle baskets, and purchase tickets to start participating in the raffle. It’s a lot of fun and why not get a sneak peek.

If you are new to Keystone, our Fall Festival is our key event of the year and I sincerely recommend attending it. The ticket covers all the children games and rides, the food, and drinks. As an experience parent and now guide, I recommend getting the 50/50 raffle as soon as you arrive since there are only a limited number sold. While your children enjoy themselves, you can go and leisurely have a drink to mingle and meet other parents. At the end of the two hour of rides and games, the children will perform a special dance for their parents, and then they go off to watch a movie and have dinner. While they are being entertained, the parents will continue the fun and go participate in the live auction. If you want more information, just send me an email and I’ll call to answer any questions you may have.

Finally, it is never too early to ask you to consider making your Tax Credit donation to Keystone. Remember to ask neighbors, family or friends who are fully employed in Arizona but don’t have children attending AZ schools. This is a good way for you and others to help support Keystone Montessori.
