It has been a busy and meaningful month in the Great Horned Owls classroom! Throughout the month, the children continued to grow in independence, strengthen their classroom routines, receive new lessons, and engage in purposeful follow-up work across the curriculum.
A Month of Community, Creativity, and Special Moments
Our classroom community enjoyed several special experiences this month. The children attended a choir performance and had the opportunity to enjoy live music together as a school community.
We also welcomed our Key Parents into the classroom to work with the children on a special project for the upcoming Fall Festival. The children enjoyed collaborating, creating, and contributing to an event that brings our larger school community together.
Sharing work with one another continues to be an important part of our classroom. Marco and Dashiell shared a story they wrote together, Vennom the Host, and later presented their poems and research about sharks. We also celebrated Lizzy’s birthday, with the children singing “Happy Birthday” in five different languages!
This month also brought a sad moment to our classroom as we said goodbye to our beloved gecko, Oreo. To remember him, the children participated in a “Remembering Oreo” activity. Some wrote poems or letters, while others created drawings in his memory. It was a meaningful opportunity for the children to express their feelings and remember a special member of our classroom community.
Mathematics
Our mathematics work continued to expand across many areas. The children received lessons and practiced concepts including multiples, the Distributive Law, the Checkerboard, Racks and Tubes, fractions, the Wooden Hierarchical Material, angles, congruence, similarity and equivalence, lines, and measurement.
Through both Montessori materials and independent follow-up work, the children continued building mathematical understanding while developing accuracy, concentration, and problem-solving skills.
Language
Our first- and second-year students continued strengthening their phonics skills through targeted lessons and practice.
Second- and third-year students continued developing their writing skills through story writing, opinion writing, descriptive writing, and expository writing. The children also explored grammar and vocabulary concepts, including nouns, verbs, prefixes, and synonyms.
Literature has also been an important part of our classroom this month. Students participated in novel studies including Because of Winn-Dixie, Freckle Juice, and Magic Tree House: Mummies in the Morning. Through reading, discussion, and follow-up activities, they continued developing comprehension skills and a deeper enjoyment of literature.
Cultural Studies and Science
Across our science and cultural curriculum, the children explored a wide range of topics. Lessons included plants, the relationship between the Sun and Earth, seasons, timelines, maps, and the history of clothing and housing.
These lessons encourage the children to make connections across subject areas and to continue asking questions about the natural world, human history, and the world around them.
We are proud of the curiosity, creativity, independence, and enthusiasm the children have shown throughout the month. We look forward to continuing our learning together after Fall Break!
