What a wonderful first month of school we have had in the Great Horned Owls classroom!
Throughout August, the children have been settling into the classroom community, building relationships, strengthening routines, and growing in confidence and independence. Our new students have continued becoming familiar with the prepared environment, while our returning students have stepped naturally back into their roles as experienced members of the classroom. It has been wonderful to see the children supporting one another, making meaningful work choices, and contributing to a calm and welcoming learning environment.
This month was also filled with opportunities for the children to share their creativity and experiences with the class. Several students gave presentations, including original stories, collaborative writing, and a video presentation about a family trip. These moments have been a wonderful way for the children to practice communication skills, build confidence, and celebrate one another’s interests and accomplishments.
Our school counselor also joined us for an activity centered around the theme “We Belong and Contribute.” The children reflected on what it means to be an important member of a community and discussed the many ways each person can make a positive contribution to our classroom and school.
Learning Highlights
August has been a very full month academically. The children listened to four of the Montessori Great Stories, which provide an inspiring foundation for many areas of study and invite children to explore the universe, life, humanity, language, and mathematics with curiosity and imagination.
In mathematics, students have been working with a variety of concepts at different levels, including daily practice with foundational addition and subtraction, place value, long multiplication, long division, multiples, and line segments.
Our language work has included phonics, cursive handwriting, verbs, sentence writing, paragraph writing, punctuation, and sentence analysis. Reading continues to be an important part of our daily classroom routine. For Novel Study, students are currently reading Freckle Juice and Because of Winn-Dixie, giving them opportunities to strengthen comprehension skills while enjoying literature together.
The children have also begun exploring many topics across our cultural curriculum. In science and geography, lessons have included the three states of matter, the layers of the Earth, the relationship between the Earth and the Sun, the needs of plants, and the functions of leaves. In history and practical life-related studies, students have explored the timeline of humans and telling time, along with many other introductory lessons that will continue to develop throughout the year.
It has been exciting to watch the children approach these new lessons with curiosity and enthusiasm. As always in the Montessori classroom, students are working at different levels and moving forward according to their individual readiness, interests, and needs.
We are very proud of the wonderful start the children have made this school year and look forward to seeing their independence, confidence, friendships, and love of learning continue to grow in the months ahead.
