As we come to the end of January, the children have continued to show strong focus, curiosity, and engagement across all areas of the classroom. After a smooth transition back to school at the start of the semester, students quickly settled into their routines and remained actively involved in meaningful work throughout the month.
Academic Learning
Math
In mathematics, students worked with a variety of Montessori materials to explore new and increasingly complex concepts. They learned long division using the Stamp Game and long multiplication with the Large Bead Frame, Checkerboard, and Flat Bead Frame. Students were also introduced to the Distributive Law, fractions, and prime factors, as well as geometry lessons including parts of a triangle, types of quadrilaterals, naming triangles, and concepts related to congruent, similar, and equivalent figures.
Language
In language, students studied different parts of speech, including nouns, adjectives, pronouns, and interjections. They also worked on sentence analysis and explored various noun classifications, supporting both their reading comprehension and writing development.
Science
In science, students explored lessons related to plants, including flowers, fruits, roots, stems, and seeds. They also studied aspects of the physical world, such as the three states of matter, rivers, and the work of the wind, encouraging observation and curiosity about natural processes.
Cultural & Creative Work
Throughout the month, students engaged in Lunar New Year activities, learning about traditional decorations and their meanings. They practiced writing the Chinese characters for “Happy New Year” (新年快乐) and worked on “福” calligraphy, while creating their own Lunar New Year decorations.
In art, students learned watercolor techniques and participated in a lesson focused on lines, applying these skills to their Lunar New Year projects.
In music, students learned a new song and participated in tone bar lessons, strengthening rhythm, pitch awareness, and listening skills.
Research, Presentations & Community
Students continued conducting research and sharing their learning with the class. Research topics this month included the Gold Rush, jellyfish, and dachshunds, and students showed growing confidence in presenting their work. One student also shared an original poem titled “Wind in the World,” adding a creative and reflective moment to our classroom community.
We also celebrated the birthdays of Kamila, Paden, and Leena, sharing joyful moments together as a class.
Due to widespread illness, we made the decision to reschedule the overnight experience to March. Thank you for your understanding and flexibility as we prioritize the health and well-being of our community.
