September Update

Hello Red-tailed Hawk Families!

We have had an awesome start to the year! Our classroom community is getting along well, with new friendships forming and new leaders stepping up to help our younger friends. We developed our set of classroom rule this year, and have begun our weekly classroom meetings.  In the classroom we have been enjoying a well-rounded variety of work and lessons. The students were very interested in the Great Lesson presentations, which set the stage for study across subject areas. We have already had several researches presented and started, including Trinidad, South Korea, Song birds, and Red pandas.

Our older students are working on abstract addition and subtraction, as well as beginning to memorize their multiplication facts. They had their first Writer’s Workshop meeting, in which we discussed the 6 Traits of Writing. They have also been reviewing simple fraction operations, large number writing, place value, and line graphs in math review.

Several students have gotten the lesson on KWL charts to help organize their research. We have been working with prefixes and suffixes, as well as root/base word identification. Alphabetizing has been at the forefront of many lessons, including alphabetizing to the first, second and third letters, dictionary usage, and guide words.

Our younger friends have been getting lessons on nouns, fractions, animal classification, cursive formation, single digit addition with the bead bars, standard linear measurement. Early and Transitional Readers have been working with word building, letter blends, phonograms and word families. We also finished our first read aloud book, The Box Car Children. In short, we have all been very busy!

We have our first Classroom and Community meeting Wednesday, September 3rd. Please plan on attending, as we will be discussing our classroom auction basket and art project, and classroom happenings.

As we have gotten into the classroom routine, there are a few reminders and notes that I would like to share with you. We have several students who are still learning to tell time. To support that, we ask that you only send in analogy watches. With a larger class this year space is at a premium. Lunch boxes are taking up a lot of space. If you have the option of sending your student with a smaller lunch box, it would be much appreciated. I understand that lunch boxes have already been purchased, but if the opportunity or need arises for a new lunchbox, smaller is better. Without the need for a beverage, you can usually fit most lunches into a compact lunch.

On a final note, if you have any questions or concerns regarding your student’s classroom activities or their day in general, please reach out to me directly. Mrs. Beth has many wonderful things to say about you children, however as the classroom assistant, I ask that she direct any questions regarding students to me.

Have a wonderful long weekend! Thank you for entrusting Mrs. Beth and myself with the care and education of your student. It is our pleasure and our privilege to work with them!

In peace and appreciation,

Mrs. Amie
