General Guidelines for Volunteers
Safety is our first priority.
All cell phones must remain off during the Volunteer time. If an emergency should arise and the use of the cell phone is warranted, please use it at your discretion.
In the classroom:
Siblings may not join our Parent/Caregiver volunteers in the classroom.
When speaking to the whole classroom, each class usually has a system to get everybody's attention. Guides are responsible for this procedure.
Talk to the children using a normal tone of voice if you are with the whole group. Your voice should be at a lower level in small groups.
If you are in the classroom and you want to invite children to work with you, let the lead guide know and they will arrange for them to join you.
Students want to be involved in the process. Let them participate and use their creativity. The process is more valuable than the outcome. For instance, in a cooking activity, students are also responsible for cleaning and doing the dishes to understand the concept of completion.
After your participation, please write a note about your experience, or ask the guide to call you. Please do not make comments (negative or positive) about children in the classroom or the Keystone community environment. The guides will appreciate your input and observations.
Hikes and Field Trips (Elementary)
Siblings may not join our Parent/Caregiver volunteers.
Meet the students in the classroom, where you will be introduced. You might be assigned a specific group of students.
The guide will share the expectations with you and the children about the field trip (safety, headcount, behavior, buddies or partners, bathroom and water breaks, snacks or lunch if included).
Stay with your assigned group if applicable during the field trip and supervise from an appropriate distance. Please refrain from cell phone usage during the entire field trip.
If a child chooses not to follow the guidelines and you have already warned them, you can ask the lead guide for assistance.
Unless stated otherwise, no purchases should be made by the students or by volunteers.
Please let the lead guide know about your experiences, behaviors of students, and observations after the field trip ends.
