Dear Keystone Families,
On August 31st, Montessori educators, students, and families celebrate the 154th anniversary of Dr. Maria Montessori’s birth. Dr. Montessori was a pioneer and a visionary who laid the foundation for a shift in education and the way the world views children. In particular, she believed children create a path to peace for all humankind. Each day, we strive to live up to the ideals she outlined for us. It is up to us to keep her spirit alive and remember why we commit ourselves to her method of education. Whether the role we play in the life of a child is that of parent, teacher, mentor, or friend, she has entrusted us to carry on her legacy. By choosing a Montessori education for your children, you have joined together with people across the globe who believe as Dr. Montessori did, “Within the child, lies the fate of the future”.
Dr. Maria Montessori’s vision is the “keystone” that helps to guide our path each day. The strength of our community, combined with our commitment to Montessori, helps us fulfill our school’s mission to inspire in children a passion for a lifelong love of learning in an environment that nurtures independence, creativity, confidence, and tolerance while developing a sense of responsibility for self and community.
In honor of Dr. Montessori’s birthday, please take a moment to read some interesting facts about our founder, and always remember, “Peace is what every human being is craving for, and it can be brought about by humanity through the child” ~ Dr. Maria Montessori.
Did you know???
- Dr. Maria Montessori was the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy.
- Helen Keller was a good friend of Dr. Montessori and helped to develop many of her sensorial materials.
- Dr. Maria Montessori made her first trip to the United States in 1912.
- In 1915, a Montessori class was set up at the San Francisco World’s Fair, and she won two gold medals for education.
- Dr. Maria Montessori left Italy during World War II and moved to India, where she and Gandhi often discussed the role of children and their education in promoting world peace.
- Anne Frank was a student in a Montessori school before she and her family went into hiding.
- Alexander Graham Bell started a Montessori school for his grandchildren.
