Happy New Year Red-tailed Hawk Families!
I hope you had a wonderful, restful and joyous break. We have many fun things ahead and the coming months will be very productive and busy!
This month we will be hiking for PE. We will be doing our hikes Tuesday mornings from approximately 8:30-11:00 beginning January 24th through February 14th. Please be sure that your student is on time to school these days, so that they will be able to join us. Students must drive with the class in order to attend the hike, and may not join us at the hiking trail. If, for some reason, a student is unable to attend a hike, she/he will be able to work in another lower elementary classroom while we are gone. Students will be transported by school bus and van, and therefore do not need a booster or car seat.
A permission slip for all hikes will be sent out next week through School Cues. Please be sure to read the permission form thoroughly and sign it so that your student will be able to attend the hikes.
In order to attend the hikes students MUST have the following:
appropriate hiking attire (including shoes with athletic tread)
water bottle or Camelback-type water system
signed permission slip
I also recommend applying sunscreen before school in the morning, a hat, and a snack.
In addition to being a fun form of exercise, these hikes are an opportunity for students to practice independence and responsibility. Parents will not be called if a student forgets any of the necessary items to hike.
Another big event coming up this month is our classroom overnight. On Thursday, January 26th, the Red-tailed Hawks and Great Horned Owls classrooms will have a combined overnight at the school. Students will return to school Thursday evening at 6:00, enjoy a community dinner, educational classes and then spend the night in the gym. There will be more information coming home next week, and we will also be looking for parent volunteers to conduct classes that evening. If you are interested in volunteering for this fun evening, please email me.
Lastly, we are in need of parent drivers in the RTH classroom. Currently we do not have any approved drivers for our class. This makes it difficult to go the library and other going-outs in the community. While we are able to ask parents from other classes, activities such as our upcoming hikes, are better conducted with parents who are familiar with our students. Please consider signing up as a driver for our classroom so that we are able to implement a robust and active going-out program. If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Ms. Sue in the office to find out what is needed to be approved to drive.
Thank you so much! I hope to see you all at our community meeting on Tuesday, January 17th. We will be having a guest speaker from Association Montessori International (AMI).
In peace and appreciation,
Mrs. Amie
